Cessna Citation CJ4 Overruns a Runway in Kentucky

Just a couple weeks ago we wrote about a Challenger 300 that overran the runway in Boca Raton, Florida. Now we have another one. On September 18, 2025, a 2013 Cessna Citation CJ4 overruns a runway in Kentucky.

The aircraft had taken off from St. Louis Regional Airport (ALN) in Illinois and was landing on runway 19 (5002 ft) at Mayfield Graves County Airport (M25). Unable to stop, it overran the runway, crossed over a highway and struck a residential home with the left wing, according to Graves County Sheriff John Hayden. The location was on the south side of KY 58 East. The crash occurred just before 4 PM.

The pilot was the only passenger on the plane. The pilot’s name has not been released but it has been reported that the owner of the home and pilot knew each other.

The Part 91 aircraft N577R2, is registered to Stonecrest Capital LLC in South Fulton, Tennessee.

As can be seen from the photographs, the aircraft sustained significant damage.

Here the Mayfield Airport did not have an EMAS (Engineered Materials Arresting System) in place like Boca Raton Airport, allowing the airport to continue for a distance past the runway.

The Citation CJ4 has had very few incidents with no recent runway overruns reported.

Unlike the HondaJet which has had some 26* runway overruns since 2022.  Some believe this higher than usual number is due to improper landing calculations by pilots unfamiliar with the aircraft and potentially a fundamental issue with the aircraft’s design or braking system.

Once again, we continue to raise questions about the maintenance rules for Part 91 aircraft vs the stricter Part 135. We are firm believers that Part 91 private jet owners who don’t fly a regular schedule, should consider jet management. This would include being put on a 135 certificate, better maintenance and getting charter revenue. A win, win.
