Bombardier Challenger 300 Overran the Runway at Boca Raton Airport
On Wednesday September 3rd a 2006 Bombardier Challenger 300 overran the runway at Boca Raton Airport (BCT). The Model BD-100-1A10, tail N776CJ, arrived from Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) Las Vegas. Records indicate the aircraft, a Part 91 fractional ownership, primary owner Taldav Holdings Mgr, Inc., James Herscot of West Palm Beach as it’s Manager/President. Reports indicated 4 people on board and no injuries.
Boca Raton, as do many airports, utilizes EMAS (Engineered Materials Arresting System) which breaks up from the weight of an aircraft, similar to a thin ice effect stopping the aircraft. The incident occurred on runway 05 with the aircraft traveling at a speed of over 50 knots (57.5 miles per hour) when entering EMAS. A video captured the incident showing without EMAS the aircraft could have continued onto busy Interstate 95 (image below).
Recently Aircraft Guys wrote a story about the TFR (Temporary Flight Restrictions) at nearby Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) when Air Force One is on the ground. Traffic from PBI, depending upon aircraft size is diverted to BCT. However, landing slots are limited, according to the local FBO operators. Since some of these dates are confidential, PBI travelers may not be made aware of the diversions or even cancellations till the day of their flight.
While the cause of this aircraft incident is not known, there have been a number of articles written somewhat critical of Part 91 aircraft maintenance and pilot qualifications vs the stricter Part 135 compliance rules.
We are happy that the EMAS did its job and there were no injuries. We have spent plenty of time at the Boca Ration Airport and know the Airport Authority operates at the highest standards.
